Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment that involves placing washed and concentrated sperm directly into the uterus during ovulation. The goal is to increase the chances of fertilization by improving the chances of healthy sperm reaching the fallopian tubes. IUI can be helpful for: Couples with infertility due to medical conditions like endometriosis or low sperm count Couples with unexplained infertility Same-sex female couples using donor sperm Single women using donor sperm During an IUI procedure, a small catheter is used to place the sperm in the uterus. The procedure can be timed with a person's menstrual cycle, or fertility medicines may be used to help the ovaries produce eggs. After an IUI procedure, a person can take a home pregnancy test two weeks later. However, a blood test is a more accurate way to determine if fertilization has occurred.
